Reading books for homeschoolers

I'm blessed with four children who love reading books. Whenever I go to the library and people look at the stack of 30 to 50 books we are carrying out for that week, I always have others in line saying how wonderful it is that my children love to read.

I don't think my children developed a passion for reading haphazardly. Like most things in life, my children learn to love reading because my husband and I modeled it to them. If you would like to have readers, your children need to see you read.

As the mom of four young children, one of whom is special needs’, finding time to read to myself let alone the four other children can be difficult at times. We established 10 minutes every evening when we read to our children before bed. Many people read bedtime stories; the difference for us is we continued once our children became literate. What changed was who did the reading. Our oldest read very well now so we take turns between mommy, daddy, and the older two reading to the other five.

My husband and I sit and listen as the older children read and they sit and listen as we read. Next we allow them 30 minutes after they go to bed to read quietly on their bunk. Since the younger two cannot yet read, they have the lights out and listen to books on tape. That way they to have 30 minutes every evening to allow their imagination to soar in a story.

I also listen to books on CD when doing housework and my children see me do this. If they come down early in the morning they will also see me sitting quietly for 15 to 20 minutes reading a book.
Getting children to read isn't hard, if your children associated with pleasant times rather than only home work. If the only reading your child gets is a textbook, it can become drudgery. Take them to the library to find a book that they’ll enjoy. Then sit beside them and read your book as they read theirs.
