Learn more about being Politically Active in your homeschool

I love politics. It's what I studied in college so teaching my children to become politically active has been fun for me. No matter where your beliefs fall along the political spectrum, there are many opportunities to get involved with your children.

For our family the first bit of involvement was letting our children know how we felt about various issues. When something was discussed on the news and our children asked us what we thought, we gave an honest answer.

That is quite different from the way things were when I grew up. I remember being a child asking my dad who he had voted for in a presidential election. My dad told me that that was not polite to ask and change the subject. However, 10 years later it was my dad who encouraged me to become politically active. He realized the importance of sharing your views with your children.

As homeschoolers it's even more important to be politically astute, if not politically active. Many laws are introduced that can either limit or expand the reach of the government into the lives of homeschoolers.

But how do you do it and keep it fun? I found that my girls were naturally passionate about issues. They wanted to express their opinion and they wanted to be involved. If it is far outside of your comfort zone to allow your children to put a sign in your lawn or to express their views to others, then consider ways that you could do it within the home. Learning about political issues is a great way to introduce persuasive papers, debate or speech classes, or even history.

The American political system was begun by politically active colonists. Teaching this to your children introduces not only political activity, but history as well.
What if you do enjoy being politically active? Then include your children. Let them know why you do what you do. A five year old can understand that mommy is going to the campaign headquarters to make phone calls to inform people of issues of importance. Your three year old can understand mommy wears a button to tell other people what she believes in. Any teenager can see the results of passionate involvement in the political process.
