Performing Arts and homeschoolers

I love the performing arts! I am blessed to live 20 minutes from two different symphonies. Not only that, but my oldest daughter is taking theater, and my younger three dance, at a local dance studio. The performing arts are a wonderful way to expand a homeschoolers mind. So many things on television today are not things I want my children to see. But I also know how much I enjoy watching plays, listening to music, and comedy.

That is why taking my children to various plays and skits have become so important to me. It gives them a chance to get out of the house and enjoy art in a new venue. I don't know if I have a budding actress growing up under my roof. Maybe one of my daughters wants to be a concert pianist. I won't know unless they are exposed to these different options.

Our local homeschool group gets discount tickets to the performing arts at the Opera House in our area. I would encourage homeschoolers to find out if these opportunities exist in their area as well. Also look into local children's theaters. Many times these groups are fairly inexpensive and offer your child a wonderful opportunity to learn a new skill and interact with other children.

If finances are an issue that makes it impossible for you to attend these events live then consider watching them on PBS or renting videos from the library can be a substitute. The important thing is to do as a family. Let your children see you enjoying the play or concert. Let it be the source of a dinnertime conversation. So many families have one child reading this book, another child watching that movie, and the parents in the other room on the Internet. There's no common ground.

However incorporating the performing arts as part of your homeschool gives you something to start from to have meaningful dialogue about music and theater. You might even want to consider putting on a small play in your own family.

Kids are created beings. When we show them different ways to express themselves, we help them grow.

Apprentice Arts is designed to easily fit into your daily schedule. Ideally, and approximately four days per week. Most activities can be completed in ten minutes or less, including prep time. Many activities, especially drama and music, can provide an active break between periods of quiet study.
The Speech Master  has information on the new Speech and Communication class series being offered by David Williams to students and their families all over the country. It equips young people to communicate their gifts effectively in their lives.
