History fun for homeschoolers

Teaching history to our children is so important. It not only helps them know who they are but how the past affects their futures too. It can help them better identify what makes the world around them run smoothly, or what might upset the balance of beneficial plans that were to be implemented and what happened when they weren’t. So knowing about History can teach better judgment to our children, and even improve their decision making skills about their own lives.

By learning historical events of the world we learn about the existence and models of good and bad judgment, and the effects of them. By teaching our children to learn from the experience of others, we are hopefully teaching them how not to repeat many of the mistakes in the past. If we teach them these important events, they can learn to be responsible citizens in the future.

But how do we teach history, and get our children to understand its importance while still having fun? Personally homeschool fieldtrips or day trips are one of our favorite ways to learn about our History. In our hometown of Cincinnati, our favorite place to go is the Museum Center. Our History Museum opened in 1990 and was one of the largest and most significant urban history museums in the country. It is huge and takes hours to get through it all, but can of course be shortened for the younger crowd by focusing on particular portions of the displays which are more age appropriate facts. The permanent exhibits include a re-creation of the Cincinnati Public Landing of the late 1850s. There is a step aboard a 94-foot side-wheel steamboat. The younger crowd really loves this.

For most of the boys in our homeschool group, you will see oogle eyes over the exhibit on World War II with actual warfront items. Most of the exhibits tell the names of people who help make Cincinnati the wonderful city it is today. With many family names that the children will recognize from friends in their own neighborhoods or churches, history becomes real to them. It helps them really connect to the past.

This year we will be going to Freedom’s Sisters. It is the first and most comprehensive traveling exhibit about women of the Civil Rights movement. It focuses on the lives of 20 African American women, and what they did to contribute to our society. Some are from the past and some from recent years. As leaders of many other women, they significantly led other women to fight for equality for people of color. I am hoping that the interactive, multi-media exhibits will encourage my daughter to realize her potential, and how she can contribute to her local community too.
