How you can teach with family films

Teaching with your Family Films?  A benefit of homeschooling is that children, and often times their parents, realize that learning is all around them, yes even in their family films. It is not limited to simply reading a textbook or taking a test. One fun thing you can do is use family films as part of your homeschool learning.

So how do you educate with movies? Isn’t that cheating?
No, it is not cheating to use films in your homeschool. There are a great number of resources available to the homeschooler to use many kinds of movies in your homeschool. Here are a few of the fun things we have done to use films, and family friendly films, in our homeschool.

1. Rent movies from the library after you’ve read the book. I got this idea from a friend and it works really well. We get the book and my older two children read the book then we watch the movie and discuss the differences between the two. Why were certain characters left out? What about the book helped you understand the movie better. One great book to do this with is Eragon by Christopher Paolini. This worked especially well because we were able to borrow the book on CD so my 5 year old daughter could also “read” the book with her sisters and participate.
2. Use family home movies to stimulate conversations and “About Me” projects. It is funny watching old VHS movies of myself as a child when I’m sitting with my kids. They ask “What is that?” they ask, then I explain what a Camcorder was. “Is THAT grandpa??” they exclaim. Then when they are done they write down the things they learned about themselves and their family.
3. For creative writing you can watch a family movie and stop it before the final conflict is resolved [this means you have to watch it before your kids]. Have them write their own endings to the movie’s story. Then play the end of the movie and everyone can compare the different possible endings.
4. And, of course, there are interesting history, science and health movies that can be borrowed from the library. Focus on the Family  offers a great resource for families to discuss important issues using movies as a prompt.
As with all parts of homeschooling, you’ll learn that the key to success in every project is in your ability to shed the “school house” mentality and allow your creativity to guide you. With this approach the learning never ends and your kids will see learning as a way of life, rather than a segment of time.
