Need encouragement just for today?

We all need encouragement in what we are doing.  There are days in the life of every homeschooler where you start to really wonder if you’re doing the right thing. Those are the days when you oversleep then realize that you don’t have the book that your 5th grader needed to do her English assignment and the phone won’t stop ringing.

How is it possible my kids are learning ANYTHING? I should just send them to the public school.  Don’t be so hard on yourself. Everyone, even a professional school teacher, has a bad day now and then.

That is why it is so important to have a strong support system and people who believe in what you are doing. I am fortunate to have a husband  who is as dedicated to homeschooling my children as I am. But in addition to that I’ve also accumulated a group of friend who are homeschoolers, or are sympathetic to homeschoolers, who I can turn to on those rough days.

Even with the stress, here are some tips to stay strong on the tough days.
1. As I said, have friends to turn to. A great source is your own family (if they support you homeschooling).  Let them know when you have a tough day.
2. Connect with local homeschooling groups. Sometimes our rough days are a result of our children not understanding the way you’re teaching. Having other homeschool parents to learn from can make this easier. Also, calling to encourage another homeschooler can lift your spirits on your low days. One word of caution, do not allow this to be a distraction from homeschooling.
3. Give your homeschool a break! Public schools have spring breaks, winter breaks, three day weekends and ½ days. So don’t worry about giving yourself a day off every once in a while to enjoy your kids, rather than simply teach them.

These are just a few tips that can make your homeschool run more smoothly. Don’t be afraid to have a bad day. You’re only human after all.

Homeschooling Family to Family  can become that bridge. Homeschooling Family to Family asks us to extend the hand of Christian fellowship as a home-schooling mentor to help a new family set aside personal fears and begin to home school. We want to encourage seasoned home schoolers to mentor at least one family per year by reaching out to relatives and friends and by helping them take the first step into home schooling
