For some parents, using educational software on the computer to help
teach your child feels a bit like cheating. After all, many
parents did not grow up using a computer in school and suspect it might
make our kids a bit lazy when they don’t have to put pencil to paper.
Other parents have embraced technology to enrich their child’s home
education. Is there a right or wrong answer in using educational
software? Is there some software that is better than others? |
The decision to utilize educational software as part of your
homeschool curriculum is an entirely personal one which may change over
time. If you are uncomfortable with the idea of your child spending
time on the computer instead of reading a book or writing, etc., you may
want to try a couple of things to see if you can raise your comfort
level.

First, consider setting a time limit. If you are concerned your
child will play games (albeit
educational games) to the exclusion of all
else, break out the kitchen timer and set a firm limit.
Second, play the game or use the software yourself!
There is no better way to acquaint yourself with software than to take
some time to do it yourself. I’m sure your kids will gladly lend you a
hand if you get stuck!
If you’ve already embraced the idea of using the computer, you may
be wondering what other homeschoolers are using. For pre-school
through elementary ages, the
Jump-Start
series is an excellent way to incorporate game playing with fun learning.
Another good series is the “Tycoon ”
software where kids can build their own zoo, amusement park, shopping
mall, etc. Middle school through high school and older kids really enjoy
role playing games like
Carmen Sandiego and
Clue .
Do kids actually learn when playing games online or using
software? There are a lot of people who find it difficult to
believe, but recent studies indicate there is much to be gained from
this time. Audio and Visual learning are happening with every
click of the mouse.
As with everything in a home education, kids benefit from exposure to
multiple sources of information such as field trips, hands-on
activities, DVD's, Videos, etc. Used the right way, educational software
can enrich your homeschool program by allowing yet another source of
learning into your curriculum even if your kids don’t realize it’s as
much learning as it is playing.
Here are some sites with
educational software for children and adults.
