Find Your Art Class

Homeschooling Art
Do you remember that when you were a kid? You’d cut out construction paper shapes, glue them on paper and see your picture hanging in the hallway. As you got older (Junior High and High School) you started to have increased opportunities to work in various mediums like clay or maybe even glass. You may not have been the best artist in the class, but you enjoyed the creative outlet.

But now you’re a homeschooling parent, so what about art? Do you need it? How do you teach it?  I wasn’t sure how to approach art when I started as a homeschooling parent. My daughter was in Kindergarten and I was never good with Art. How was I going to do this?

Actually there are many options to homeschooling parents. If you attend a homeschool convention you’ll be able to talk to the makers of curriculum and products you can use in Art. There will be simple tools for playing in clay all the way up to complex items. You need to determine how far you want to go in your teaching.

You will also want to take the time, as your kids grow older, to teach them about styles of art and specific artists. Take them to an Art Museum then have a test on what they learned. This will give you something quantitative for their portfolio and keep your student focused.

Another option would be to have your child learn about a particular artist or style and then visit the museum to study only that. Have a culminating project that includes a report, examples and maybe their own attempt at art in that style.  Finally, if finances permit, see if your local art museum offers classes for students to take. If your child really enjoys art encourage their talent. Don’t allow your limitations to make you fearful, seek out resources in your community.

Whether a creative outlet or a natural passion, Art is an important part of every homeschooling program.
