What is apologetics, and how is it used to teach

Christian apologetics is the field of study concerned with the systematic defense of Christianity. The term "apologetic" comes from the Greek word apologia. This approach to learning takes a very logical and rational approach to the Christian faith.

So how does that look in your homeschool?  Parents who wish to take this approach to their homeschooling will take a measured look and work through arguments of faith logically.

But just because it’s logical does not mean it has to be boring, in fact, many find it is just the opposite. Parents can take time to sit down with their student and work through the rational explanations of why the Christian faith is supported by history, science…even the stars.

By taking a biblical look at creation, then comparing it to the scientific record, and realizing that the Bible can fill in the gaps of “scientific mysteries” students and their parents are filled with wonder and the vastness of creation.

This particular way of teaching can work very well with parents who wish to use unit studies or unschooling, in addition to a more structured approach. The smallest child can learn about the wonder of dinosaurs then visit a zoo or museum. The obvious question then becomes “Why did the museum say one thing while our book said another.”

Then model the apologetic method. Work through it logically noting where the Bible supports science and science supports the Bible. Student in upper grades can extend this even further by creating full length research papers defending the scriptures in light of what is taught in mainstream society.

It is very exciting when you can work through an argument and suddenly feel your intellectual side come to the same realization your spirit has: There is a wonderful, creative God in the universe that put all of this together.

That intellectual pursuit will prepare a student to stand up for what is right. That joy of discovery is the reward of disciplined, logical defense of scripture.
