World View

When homeschooling it is easy to get trapped up in your own world view. By that I don't mean your moral beliefs, I mean what you see outside to a back window. It is funny to me, having grown up in this city, that my children understand so little of city life. Despite being about a five-minute drive from the city, ours is a world of chickens, farmers, 4-H, and Gardens.

There will come a day however when my children will leave the safety of my home. Whether that day comes when they start high school, college, or married life, the day will come. Part of my role as a homeschooling mom is to help them understand where they come from and transition to where they are going.

For me one of the most important parts of being a homeschooling mom is making sure my children understand what I believe and why I believe it. I gradually introduce things of the outside world. This makes it sound like I have a cult or something, doesn’t it? It's not that way at all. But there are topics that I believe should not be taught to six year olds, that a 10 year old should understand.

I like to bring it in things I learned as an exchange student to France when talking to my kids. I teach about other cultures. There are wonderful resources, Highlights magazine has some great ones, that make him easy for a homeschooling parent to bring the world safely within the confines of the home.

So whether you're teaching your children about distant lands, and the world in your backyard, using resources like the Internet, children's magazines, and even some television programs, can help present a world view to our children in a safe way that engages their interest.
