Teaching with Wall Charts

Wall charts can be a great addition to your school. You can find them on a variety of different topics from geography to grammar or to science. Having them as part of your homeschool can help not only create a learning environment for your children also reinforced the idea that learning never stops.

In our homeschool week began using wall charts before our children were homeschool age. We had one chart that showed the colors and shapes: blue triangle, red circle, yellow rectangle. And then we had a second chart that showed the letters of the alphabet and a picture for each letter. For example, the letter had a picture of a shiny red Apple and the word “Apple” written below it. The charts were hung, one on the door to the basement, the other on the door to the upstairs. My children would point to a picture and either ask what it was, or eventually told me what it was.

This made learning fun for them. As our children got older it was only logical that we would continue to use wall charts to teach new concepts. When we were in the process of adopting our daughter from Russia we had a large wall chart with a heart sticker on top of the city where she was living. Then we could look at the countries surrounding Siberia and talk about them. We could talk about time zones explaining the difference between what the time was where we were and where she was. We could teach on geography and climate. We could discuss Russian culture and history as well as American culture and history. One wall chart allowed us to dialogue on many different topics.

Now as our children are moving into more complex topics, we are adding wall charts that have math factors, science terms, and other learning. You can find wall charts at a teaching supplies store for only a few dollars. A great investment.
