Vocabulary just the way you like it

Vocabulary is an interesting topic. Do you teach it during reading? Or do you teach it during spelling? Depending on the curriculum that you use you may end up teaching it during both.

We teach vocabulary and our house during the spelling portion and the dictation portion of school. We do this for a couple of different reason. First, when introducing new vocabulary it's important that a student be able to spell it. So if there is a new vocabulary word that logically works with our spelling list we add it, along with its definition, into the spelling lesson. We try to keep the definition very short because on spelling test day when we get the word our child must both write and define the word on their spelling paper.

During dictation we not only give the word and definition, but we also use it in a sentence.
This is because it is important in learning vocabulary not only to understand what the word means but also how it is best used in common language.

How do you keep this from becoming boring rote memorization?
One way you can do it is to try to choose a word to something that interests your child anyway, or with something that they are learning about in school.

Unfortunately, sometimes it will come down to simply rote memorization of new vocabulary.
At those times it is best to simply plow through, learn the words, and move on to the next lesson. I try to avoid this is much as possible, and usually succeed, because I don't give a large list of vocabulary. In fact, for a fourth grade student I only introduced one or two vocabulary words each week to our spelling list. And usually these vocabulary words relate in some way to the theme of our spelling list. For example, if we were to have a spelling list revolving around food, I might add the vocabulary word ‘sift’.

Why not add new words as a family and add it to dinnertime conversation?
