Learn more about Rosetta Stone and languages

Rosetta Stone is great for anyone at any age!  I love foreign languages. I always have. I began to teach myself American Sign Language when I was ten and by the time I was 16 I knew ASL, German and was fluent in French. I even knew a bit of Spanish.

When I had kids of my own I wanted to pass that love of language along to my children. I also didn’t want to limit them to the languages I felt I could teach. I had read a great deal about Rosetta Stone but it wasn’t until someone gave me one of the CDs for Christmas that I realized how great the system was.   Below is a screenshot of just one of the activity pages.

Through a series of simple photographs and repeated phrases you are quickly introduced to your new language. It is simple enough for my five year old daughter to learn from yet challenging enough for me to review French (and keep up my ear).

It teaches in a very natural way. There are no challenging curriculum and conjugation tables to memorize. Language is learned naturally. Having spent time abroad as a foreign exchange student in High School I know that students that constantly translate back to their mother tongue will never reach a strong level of fluency. They avoid that problem by using pictures, rather than dictionaries of words, to introduce new vocabulary.

Not only that but another great side benefit was that I used the English version to help my daughter with severe hearing loss and speech delays improve comprehension. Since there are no lips to read, only pictures, she has to focus on using her hearing aids to distinguish sounds. It also gave me a quantitative way to determine her level of comprehension. This is crucial when homeschooling a special needs child (See my article on special needs homeschooling for more on quantitative documentation of your special learners).

So whether you have one child who would like to learn Chinese or the entire family would like to learn French, Rosetta stone is a wonderful tool for a homeschool family. Be sure to get the special homeschooler versions to enjoy the additional features that make life simpler for a homeschool mom.
