| The
Charlotte Mason method to schooling children is focused on
creating and adapting to the various whims of a child.
“Whoa, isn’t that letting the inmates run the asylum?” some of
you will ask. |
Not
exactly. This approach focuses on helping a student stay focused by
taking a flexible approach to the school day. The Mason method
encourages taking great care in studies but helps make that possible by
keeping time on each individual subject short.
Instead of spending an hour on arithmetic, a student may spend twenty
minutes. Instead of learning grammar by reading a book, it is taught
through interaction and repetition. When a student makes a mistake,
simply quote it back in the corrected form.
This method says that rather than focusing on grades, students should
be taught a variety of subjects using a great thinkers, cultural events,
and time outside of the classroom as a teacher. She also believed
that using primary sources and quotes from historical figures were far
better than reading a textbook or copying ‘The dog ran down the street.’
To learn handwriting.
Every moment in life was an opportunity to learn. She pioneered
her method in the classroom but it works very well for homeschooling
parents. Go outside with a book of poems and read about spring while you
sit in the cool grass and listen to the bugs wake up. Copy a portion of
George Washington’s farewell speech to work on handwriting.

Journaling was a big part of Charlotte Mason’s method so spend a day
exploring the community where you live and have your student jot down
things they noticed for the first time and how they felt about them.
We’ve lived in this town for more than a decade but recently discovered
a building we hadn’t noticed right by the ice cream shop.
Learning is all around us and reflecting on that can make learning more
of a lifestyle, than a chore.
